The idea for The Jessie began taking shape after the financial collapse of 2008, when nonprofits were under enormous strain as operating costs and rents continued to rise. The Jessie Ball duPont Fund saw an opportunity to help stabilize the local nonprofit sector by creating a space where organizations could access high-quality, affordable offices, reduce overhead and dedicate more resources to their missions. After touring Jacksonville’s former public library and recognizing its enormous potential, the Fund purchased the building in 2013 and began an extensive renovation. The Jessie opened its doors in 2015, bringing that vision to life. Today, The Jessie is one of the largest nonprofit centers in the United States. Home to a diverse group of 27 nonprofit organizations, it also serves as a public space for North Florida residents that hosts a variety of programs including art installations, musical events, community conversations and more
